Arvind Kejriwal is an Indian politician and former civil servant best known as the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and for serving multiple terms as the Chief Minister of Delhi. He first rose to prominence as an anti-corruption activist before transitioning into electoral politics.
Early Life and Education
Arvind Kejriwal was born on August 16, 1968, in Siwani, Haryana, India. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. After graduating, he joined the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) as an officer in the Income Tax Department.
Activism and Entry into Politics
Kejriwal gained national recognition during the India Against Corruption movement led by social activist Anna Hazare around 2011. The movement demanded the establishment of a strong anti-corruption watchdog (Lokpal). Following ideological differences within the movement, Kejriwal entered active politics and co-founded the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2012.
Political Career
2013: Became Chief Minister of Delhi for the first time after AAP’s surprise electoral performance. His initial term lasted 49 days.
2015: AAP won a landslide victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, and Kejriwal returned as Chief Minister.
2020: AAP again secured a decisive mandate in Delhi, continuing his leadership.
As Chief Minister, Kejriwal’s government has emphasized reforms in education, healthcare (particularly through mohalla clinics), electricity subsidies, and water supply.
Leadership Style and Policies
Kejriwal is widely regarded as an anti-corruption reformer who promotes welfare-oriented governance in Delhi. Supporters credit his administration with improvements in government schools and expanded access to public healthcare. Critics, however, have questioned some of his populist policies and his political confrontations with the central government.
Awards and Recognition
Before entering politics, Kejriwal received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2006 for his work promoting transparency and empowering citizens through the Right to Information movement.
